2014 Summer Bucket List

I have been kind of slow to develop a summer bucket list this year. I didn't seem to have any trouble writing a "to do" list though!  The funny thing is I have already done a couple things on my list which apparently I have stored away mentally...

So here is my list in no particular order.  I have titled it "Eat, Love, Pray".  Each item could fit in in one of those categories... :)

Eat:

  • Eat food from a food truck.
  • Have breakfast with Child 1 at Kolaches.  He would LOVE it.
  • Have breakfast or lunch with the hubs at Rick's Bakery.
  • Eat dessert whenever I want with NO guilt.
  • Make homemade ice cream.  (I am considering getting an ice cream maker)
  • Eat a pizza from Giordanos.
  • Try cooking 5 new recipes this summer.
  • Try at least 5 new shaved ice flavors.

Pray/Rest My Soul:
  • Pray without ceasing.
  • Regular quiet times.
  • Let people know when they come to mind and I pray for them.
  • Thank God each day for someone in my life.
  • Rest/nap each day if I want to.
  • Get together with some other adoptive moms and share from the heart.
  • Read one book for fun, another for work.
  • Finish a beach puzzle I started a LONG time ago and didn't get far on...
  • Be in the moment.
Love:
  • Go whitewater rafting.
  • See a bear. In the wild.
  • Slow dance with my husband.
  •  Watch a meteor shower.
  • Take an amazing sunset picture.
  • Ride my bike on one trail (at least).
  • Simplify and organize.
  • Take a spontaneous trip.  Maybe. :)
  • Buy a fun pair of pj's.
  • See a waterfall or two or three...
  • Float the Buffalo with the family.
  • Vacation with my sister/her family.
  • Sleep in at least ONE day until 9.
  • Visit with friends from my past.
I am sure this list will be revised a time or two...

So what is on your summer bucket list?

Summertime...

Okay, I told you in my last post that technically my summer is over. And that is true. Once I set foot in my school, summer is done (for me). However, I am feeling nostalgic this week FOR my summer, so I am going to post a little more before I move on to some real life not as fun posts.

I have been thinking about the "poems" my kids have written over the years focusing on a topic and the senses used to explore that topic. So that will be my post today.

Summertime
by Reba

Summer looks like...
   green grass
      the ocean blue
brilliant sunsets as the day ends
lightning bugs flashing in the night

Summer sounds like...
      silence (no alarm clocks!)
            children laughing
                 waves crashing against the shore
                        crickets chirping through the night

Summer feels like...
              warm sand between my toes
a sunny day shining upon my arms
the cool pool water lapping at my legs
ice cream dripping down my chin

Summer smells like...
           freshly cut grass
the salt water of the ocean
                       food cooking on the grill
                            basil growing outside my window

Summer tastes like...
Gooey smores, hot off the grill
                     ice cold lemonade
                            Grilled shrimp
                                 shaved ice

Summer is...
               peace
                    laid-back
                           adventure
                                time to reflect.

I love summer.

More soon,
Reba

The End of the Summer Bucket List...

for now.

My summer is over.

I know, technically summer doesn't end until September.

But for me, once I start back to school, my summer is over.

Ironically, it doesn't even feel like summer right now.  We have had more rain in August than I ever remember having for the whole summer most years.  And the temperatures are not even that warm (or at least not hot).

Anyway, here is the list one last time with the final tally...

My summer bucket list:
  • to say "yes" more than I say "no" to my kids. You have NO idea how hard this is for me!  I can honestly say I did this.  I said yes a LOT more than I said no.  And I feel good about that.
  • to nap anytime I want (every day if I want to) without feeling guilty about it  I did this as much as was possible with volleyball practices, appointments, and such.  I am already missing those naps...
  • to go on a float trip (this one may be happening soon!)  Did that in late June.  Loved it.  I would kind of like to try it with kids.  It is looking like that might be a good possibility with all of the rain we have had!
  • to eat lobster and shrimp ravioli and Joe's incredible rolls without an ounce of guilt or regret  I did that in early summer but I think I may have to add that to my fall bucket list. :)  Yum, yum.
  • to dance in the rain with my daughter  We did that not long ago (it has been easier with all of the rain).  The funny thing was it was on her bucket list too. So we went outside and once out there, she said, "Now what do we do?"
  • to spend just one day ALL day on my computer whether it is playing games, cleaning out my cache, or organizing my bookmarks  That did not happen.  I did work on cleaning out some e-mails and such but I actually ended up spending LESS time on my computer. Oh well.
  • to read at least one (if not more) book just for fun...not for parenting or teaching!  I did get a couple read.  One of my goals for fall is to do more reading, sometimes fun, sometimes practical.  To do that, I will have to continue to limit my computer time...there just isn't enough time for both!
  • to wear eye shadow (a little odd but I just don't do that typically)  I have done that quite a bit this summer.  And I think I will continue to do so though not every day.
  • to get a new camera  I got one for my birthday!  I love my new camera though I have a lot to learn with it.  I know it is capable of doing more than I know how to do with it.  So a goal this coming year will be to learn more about it and its capabilities.
  • to go to the farmer's market at least once (if not more)  We did and enjoyed it.  I don't think it will be a regular thing for us but once in a while, it is nice to be out. I did buy a beautiful basil plant that has been thriving in all of this rain.  If I could just find a cilantro plant (my attempts to grow plants failed...), I would be in good shape.
  • to slow dance with my husband (love to but it is rare)  Didn't happen.  We have mentioned it a few times but haven't actually done so.  Maybe this fall...
  • to make homemade ice cream (no, don't have a maker...)  Didn't happen.  :(  I still want to do this at some point.  Maybe I will just get a maker on clearance or something...
  • to do a random act of kindness  We have done a few of these, though it isn't completely random.  One that comes to mind lately involved paying a toll for someone else. They did know about it so it wasn't anonymous but it was random.
  • to find a shark tooth on the beach (but not IN the shark's mouth)  Woohoo!  Did that!
  • to watch a meteor shower with my husband...even better, outside of the city limits/lights!  We did watch the meteor shower though it wasn't out of the city limits.  These showers always happen when I am returning to school and of course are late at night, so leaving the city to watch is difficult...
  • to see a waterfall that takes my breath away  I am pretty sure Niagara counts for this one.  There really are no words to describe that one!
  • to watch the sun rise at least once (I am usually snoozing)  I managed a couple times on our beach trip. Otherwise, I have slept right through them... :)
  • to visit some local "swimming holes" with the kids  We did visit a couple.  I had hoped and planned to visit more but our summer has been a little odd.
  • to not set my alarm clock as much as possible  I did this any day possible until this week. And this week, I am NOT liking the sound of that alarm...
  • to make smores with the kids   We did this a couple times. I enjoyed each and every bite...
  • to visit with friends...you know, the ones we always say we need to get together with but don't!  I did do this with one friend. I am still working on setting up a time meet with another...
  • to ride a bike trail  Didn't happen. :( But maybe in the fall...
  • to learn how to grill  I am not ready to grill steaks or anything but I can muddle through it...
  • to visit a state park I visited two though neither were Arkansas State Parks...
  • to pay off something I have wanted paid off for a long time  Didn't happen. :( I am still hoping for a surprise check or to stumble on some cash to get this done.
  • to buy a pair of fun summer time pajamas Done. Just wore them last night.
  • to eat a Chicago pizza Done and enjoyed EVERY bite. I am already ready for another...
  • to feel God's presence in a MIGHTY way, something that can only be experienced, not explained Okay, that didn't happen. But this is God I am talking about. Ultimately He is in charge of those moments. And they won't happen before then, bucket list or not.
  • to go to the zoo

I can also cross off one of my "unspoken ones". :)

I didn't even have visit another country on my list and I can cross that off. :)

All in all, it was a good summer. I enjoyed these moments as well as many more.

More later,
Reba

Summer Bucket List...revisited

I am back!

I finally finished up all of our vacation posts on the family blog.

Now I can get back to the nitty gritty of real life.

Since it is mid-summer, I figure I should revisit the summer bucket list and see how things are going...

  • to say "yes" more than I say "no" to my kids. You have NO idea how hard this is for me! Obviously this is a daily one but I can say that I have done this a LOT this summer.  So hopefully it will continue.
  • to nap anytime I want (every day if I want to) without feeling guilty about it  I do this one almost daily and I don't feel the least bit guilty.
  • to go on a float trip (this one may be happening soon!) Did it, loved it, would love to do it again.  I am looking at a family trip but it is so dry everywhere right now...
  • to eat lobster and shrimp ravioli and Joe's incredible rolls without an ounce of guilt or regret I did this one day when the kids were with my mom, just me (I did take out).  And I enjoyed every bite. In fact, I loved it so much, I may just have to do it again...
  • to dance in the rain with my daughter That would require rain... :)
  • to spend just one day ALL day on my computer whether it is playing games, cleaning out my cache, or organizing my bookmarks I may be doing this one soon but not necessarily for fun. I have some professional development I need to do...
  • to read at least one (if not more) book just for fun...not for parenting or teaching! I did this one over vacation. In fact, I read two books just for fun.  That is pretty much the only time I can do it...when I am in a car and the children are in a controlled environment (a.k.a. their seat belts). :)
  • to wear eye shadow (a little odd but I just don't do that typically) I have actually been doing this regularly this summer. Kind of fun!
  • to get a new camera Probably not going to happen...other expenses prevail. :(
  • to go to the farmer's market at least once (if not more) I haven't yet but it is still on my list to do, hopefully soon.
  • to slow dance with my husband (love to but it is rare) You know, at the beach would have been a beautiful background for this.  But it didn't happen. I am still holding out hope that at some point we will dance...
  • to make homemade ice cream (no, don't have a maker...) A friend has offered me use of their ice cream maker so hopefully soon.
  • to do a random act of kindness I have been doing some acts of kindness (whenever I can) but I am not sure any of them have been "random" yet...
  • to find a shark tooth on the beach (but not IN the shark's mouth) I ended up finding 3 in all!
  • to watch a meteor shower with my husband...even better, outside of the city limits/lights! Not yet but there is a major meteor shower in August.
  • to see a waterfall that takes my breath away  Refer to that "no rain" thing I mentioned before...
  • to watch the sun rise at least once (I am usually snoozing) I did do this one...at the beach no less!  It was beautiful.
  • to visit some local "swimming holes" with the kids I have done this some but right now they are all pretty dry.  Hopefully we will get rain soon and get to visit more.
  • to not set my alarm clock as much as possible I don't set it unless I have to...
  • to make smores with the kids  We did this on the grill on the 4th while at the beach. Oh. My. Goodness.  Delicious.  We will be doing that again.  I know it isn't the same as doing them over a campfire but it tastes just as good!
  • to visit with friends...you know, the ones we always say we need to get together with but don't! I am working on this one.  We did get to have dinner with one set of friends, and I have plans in the works with a couple of other friends to visit before summer's end...
  • to ride a bike trail Maybe when it isn't so hot? :)
  • to learn how to grill I did learn a little while at the beach.  I want to try more of it here at home with our grill. The hard part is that I am usually inside cooking "sides".
  • to visit a state park Technically, I have visited a state park. It just wasn't MY state.  We visited Fort Clinch (a state park) in Florida twice.
  • to pay off something I have wanted paid off for a long time Not looking good for this one but why not set some high goals too? :)
  • to buy a pair of fun summer time pajamas I did buy some that I love.  Even if my oldest child said I reminded him of Minnie Mouse in them...
  • to eat a Chicago pizza Not yet...
  • to feel God's presence in a MIGHTY way, something that can only be experienced, not explained Not yet though I have felt His presence more recently...
  • to go to the zoo Did that one :)
  •
The unspoken one hasn't happened yet either...

So that is where I am.

How about you?

How is your summer bucket list going?

My Summer Bucket List

My daughter told me a few days ago that one of her friends had made a summer bucket list and that she was going to do the same.

I think I laughed and thought, "Kids."

But then yesterday she showed me her list.

I LOVE it.

It is just a fun mixture of simple fun ideas and a few outrageous.

It is carefree.

It is so her.

And it got me to thinking...

Why don't I have my own summer bucket list?

The funny thing is that I have been contemplating this for about 24 hours now and it is not easy.

I have to work really hard to separate "bucket list" and my "to do" list.

The "to do" list is easier for me to think of!

When did I become so boring, so practical?

I think it was the day I became a mom.

But I am determined to come up with a list.

I am trying to think of fun out of the ordinary things for me but also somewhat practical/attainable.

I mean, a week long getaway to an exotic location with just the hubs is a dream of mine but that doesn't mean it is going to happen this year or next or even the next.  I mean, who wants our four kids for a week? And we just started paying for braces.

Or spending a day eating just chocolate...that would be a dream come true. But I can't do that to my body; I have worked too hard to get where I am at now.

Or a week at the beach with my parents and my sister/her family...it is a HUGE dream of mine.  Not happening this year. And probably not next either.

But I have come up with a few things, though this list is a work in progress.  There are a few I won't share, just for modesty's sake...

My summer bucket list:
  • to say "yes" more than I say "no" to my kids. You have NO idea how hard this is for me!
  • to nap anytime I want (every day if I want to) without feeling guilty about it
  • to go on a float trip (this one may be happening soon!)
  • to eat lobster and shrimp ravioli and Joe's incredible rolls without an ounce of guilt or regret
  • to dance in the rain with my daughter
  • to spend just one day ALL day on my computer whether it is playing games, cleaning out my cache, or organizing my bookmarks
  • to read at least one (if not more) book just for fun...not for parenting or teaching!
  • to wear eye shadow (a little odd but I just don't do that typically)
  • to get a new camera
  • to go to the farmer's market at least once (if not more)
  • to slow dance with my husband (love to but it is rare)
  • to make homemade ice cream (no, don't have a maker...)
  • to do a random act of kindness
  • to find a shark tooth on the beach (but not IN the shark's mouth)
  • to watch a meteor shower with my husband...even better, outside of the city limits/lights!
  • to see a waterfall that takes my breath away
  • to watch the sun rise at least once (I am usually snoozing)
  • to visit some local "swimming holes" with the kids
  • to not set my alarm clock as much as possible
  • to make smores with the kids
  • to visit with friends...you know, the ones we always say we need to get together with but don't!
  • to ride a bike trail
  • to learn how to grill
  • visit a state park
  • to pay off something I have wanted paid off for a long time
  • to buy a pair of fun summer time pajamas
  • to eat a Chicago pizza
  • to feel God's presence in a MIGHTY way, something that can only be experienced, not explained
  • to go to the zoo
Well, it's a start.

I am sure more will come to me with time.

I know I won't do all of them but it has been fun to think about.

So...what is on your bucket list for the summer?

What I DID This Summer

Every year when school ends, I have grand summer plans in my mind.  LOTS of organizing.  Redecorating.  Fun travel.  Visits to the lake or river.  Tackling the stack of magazines I have only partially read.

And every year when August rolls around and I see my "break" coming to an end, I feel panicked.  And defeated. And sad.

Sad I didn't do SOOOO many of the things I was just sure I would.

In those times, I could wallow in the pit of despair.  It is a good excuse to eat a lot of chocolate.

OR...

I can stop and reflect and think about the things I DID get done (even if they weren't on my original list).

That is what I am choosing.  I still may eat chocolate though...

  • Supported husband as he launched his own business
  • Cleaned out my medicine cabinet (which had not been cleaned out in quite a while apparently)
  • Sorted kids' schoolwork (only the saved pieces) from last school year
  • Baked and decorated the girls' birthday cake
  • Organized the girls' birthday celebration
  • Exercised at least 5 days every week I think, actually hitting 6 most of the time
  • Tried several new recipes (some that have become favorites already)
  • Took the kids swimming at the river
  • Transported kids to swimming lessons
  • Sent Child 2 to her first week camp
  • Transported two other kids to their camps
  • Visited my sister for a week while the girls went to a horse camp
  • Had shaved ice dates with my husband
  • Planned, packed for, and went on a week long vacation at the beach...our pup's first vacation!
  • Enjoyed a day at the lake with friends
  • Met TWO "virtual friends" (friends via adoption but only met through the Internet prior to our real meetings)
  • Hosted a friend for a couple of days
  • Read two "fun" books and more parenting books than I can count
  • Lost a couple more pounds...about five more to go
  • Took the kids swimming at their grandparents' house
  • Played numerous rounds of Candyland and Apples to Apples, as well as dramatic play with Little People
  • Washed, dried, and folded at least 6 loads (usually more) of laundry a week
  • Organized Child 4's books (with his assistance)
  • Planned the girls' "new" room (though we haven't implemented yet...)
  • Shredded
  • Experienced some "life changing" parenting training via a book, DVD, and a mentor who thankfully answers questions any time I have them
  • "Re-adopted" our younger two (now I have to get the youngest's name changed on everything...)
  • Organized under our bed
  • Weeded out clothing in the closet
  • Worked on a puzzle with child 3
  • Started journals with both girls to keep the lines of communication open
  • Celebrated hubby's 40th birthday
  • Hopefully encouraged several via Facebook and blogs
  • Watched the meteor shower
  • Had a night getaway with hubby
  • Tried some new foods (like edamame and quinoa)
  • Took kids to doctor's appointments (3 I believe)
  • Took the pup in her for her yearly checkup and booster shots
  • Took the youngest school supply shopping
  • Menus planned and executed each week
  • Got a deep freeze (and filled it with cow meat)
  • Climbed a light house
  • Blogged fairly regularly
  • Cleaned out the car...a couple times :)
  • Cooked lunch for the church interns
  • Watched several hours of Lock Up
  • Pulled out child 4's first tooth :(  I wasn't ready for that one)
  • Read up on and started implementing activities to help with sensory issues one or more of my children are dealing with
  • Took and edited TONS of pictures
  • Donated my hair
  • Got a new roof
  • Started parenting "intentionally" (will explain one day)
I am sure I can think of more, but I am getting tired.

I do know that thinking about what I did makes me feel much better about the things I didn't...

The Lazy Days of Summer...Or Are They?

I know I said I was going to write all about unemployment this week.  And yes, we are still there.  But there is something else on my mind.

The lazy days of summer.

Or are they?

I have fond memories of summer.

Playing in the sprinkler.  Riding my bike.  Playing with neighbors.  Playing school.  Visiting family.  Going to the library to check out piles of books.  Chasing fireflies.  Eating popsicles.  Fishing with my grandfather on the lake.  Jumping on the trampoline.

I maybe attended VBS and an occasional day camp (then church camp and cheerleading camp later in my teen years).

They were truly the lazy days of summer.

I am not so sure many kids can say that these days.

I LOVE Pinterest (which you may know if you read the cooking blog).  But one trend that has bothered me is the multiple "pinnings" of sites with lists of activities to do with your kids in the summer to keep them busy.  One local kid publication is filled with camps...if I had enough money, I could send my kids to camps all summer long (I wouldn't, but I could).  Yesterday I listened to a lady detailing her summer.  One child is in gymnastics several days a week, while another is on a traveling baseball team.  The baseball team has ONE off week this summer. Even my kids have been known to come in and say, "So what are we doing today?"  (I just laugh because they obviously forget from summer to summer who I am :)

I am not saying activities are bad.  Or camps are bad.  Some of my kids will attend one or two.

What I am saying is that free time is NOT all bad.

In fact, it might be good.

By the way, I don't count free time curled up in front of the tv all day.

Sometimes kids need to have free time.  Whether they know it or not.

I know I do.

And when they do, they might surprise you.

The kids might turn out to be creative.  They might have imagination. They might actually play with some of that stuff that clutters their rooms.  They might find ways to fill their time, ways you wouldn't imagine.

Which is why I try to keep my summers as lazy as possible other than an occasional camp.  Or our summer vacation (which is actually very laid-back too).

Just this week, we have had tents made out of blankets.  Fashion shows.  Talent shows.  Singing. Swimming in my parents' pool.  Playing with cousins.  Coloring.  Listening to books on CD.  Reading.  Playing with the dog.  Exercising with me.  Playing with toys in the toyroom, toys that are ignored the rest of the year due to the busyness of school. Arts and crafts.

Yes, it can be a pain sometimes.  They make messes. They tattle.  They argue. They complain they are bored (at least until I offer them chores to do :).

But I still believe, deep in my heart, there is value in having free time.

They learn to entertain themselves.  They learn to work together to accomplish things. They create and plan.  They slow down.  They rest.  They recharge.  And they have fun.

And so do I.

And that is why I love the lazy days of summer.

What I Did This Summer

You know how people set lofty goals/resolutions in January for the New Year? Well, while I try that on occasion, I am just about as lofty in thought in June as I look upon the "whole summer" before me. I find myself setting goals for myself, ways I can improve the house, the children, me throughout the summer.

Come August, I find myself looking back over the summer and wondering, "Where the heck did it go?" (Sorry if that word offends anyone, it just emphasizes the strength of my statement. :) This year is no different.

What did I plan to do this summer? Organize a room a week. Make a new recipe each week. Lose 10 pounds. Read the Bible in 90 days (that was our church's challenge to us). Redo the girls' room. Exercise regularly.

Well, I did attempt the room thing but didn't hit every room in the house. Really, just a couple rooms, and even then, not thoroughly. I did make a few new recipes, but there were weeks we were doing good to get dinner made at all (like swimming lesson week). 10 pounds? I don't think I lost one. I have avoided the scales, so I can't say for sure. The Read the Bible in 90 days was ruined in the first couple of weeks. For one thing, the schedule started at the end of school. I was in complete survival mode and couldn't read 15 chapters at a time. By the time I was done with school, I was so far behind, there was nothing I could do. And while you would think I would have more "quiet time" in the summer, I actually do better during the school year when I am on a schedule. The girls' room? Well, not doing it was partly them, partly me. I will not do anything to it until I can see they are serious about taking care of it. 'Nuff said about that. :) Finally, exercise? On occasion. I have a hard time exercising when it is really hot outside.

My first instinct is to fret over what I didn't accomplish. It is easy to put myself down for failing. I feel like a big failure. I had goals, and I didn't accomplish them. Trust me, I have thought these things many times. I have beat myself black and blue over it.

Then about a week ago, I thought to myself, "If I didn't do those things, what DID I do?" I started to formulate a list in my head...
  • I stayed on top of laundry. In fact, I think I washed, folded, and put away more laundry this summer than I do in a typical school year (thanks to a very helpful hubby). I am actually kind of hoping I can do that this school year too by following Fly Lady's plan of a load of laundry a day. We will see how that goes.
  • I visited Las Vegas for the first time. I walked the Strip. I saw the lights. I visited the M and M store (which was one of my favorite parts!). I saw Cirque du Soleil: Ka for the first time.
  • I visited the Grand Canyon for the first time. There are no words, no photos that do justice to that amazing scene!
  • I rode in a Hummer for the first time. (part of our Grand Canyon tour)
  • I took our oldest to his first summer camp. Well, took him to the church where they departed. It was MUCH harder than I anticipated.
  • I picked child 2 up from basketball camp. I am thankful for her daddy for taking her. It is difficult to get everyone up and going just to take one child to activities.
  • I made breakfast (some days easy, some days a little more elaborate) pretty much every day for five of us except Sundays. And lunch.
  • I organized our "office supply" drawer in the kitchen.
  • I went for a bike ride with child 1. We didn't make it far because it was VERY hot out. But it was a start!
  • I had my first snow cone from a shaved ice place. (We usually just make our own snow cones around here :)
  • I went through a Mommy/Daughter Bible study this summer with child 2. It was very good, but WAY out of my comfort zone.
  • I organized about three years of memorabilia from the kids' birthday parties, school highlights, etc.
  • I packed a week of clothes/shoes/hair accessories for child 3 to spend time with Meme and Papaw in Mississippi.
  • I planned, prepared, and held the girls' family birthday party.
  • I bought and wrapped 10+ gifts for each child to open on our vacation.
  • We traveled to Gulf Shores, AL for our week at the beach, oil and all.
  • I visited the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola for the first time.
  • I climbed 177 steps up (and then back down) on a trip to a lighthouse...another first for me.
  • I toured the USS Alabama. I lost track of how many steps that involved!
  • I visited a "fort".
  • I saw stingrays swimming under me on the pier.
  • I hiked about four miles, parts of it in the rain, on a sandy trail in brand new shoes...big mistake!
  • I witnessed oil clean up on the beach right outside our townhouse.
  • I took and picked up child 1 from sports camp four days a week for three weeks (Mark did do it a few times).
  • I renewed my library card. We also made a few trips to the library.
  • We fed the ducks at the "duck park".
  • We survived swim lesson week...hopefully my last in the water for "Mommy and Me" as well as witnessing our first swim team graduate. I am proud of him but do rejoice in some of the glory since I have taken him to lessons every summer since he was six months old.
  • I organized photo vocabulary cards for my classroom AND made a database of them.
  • I signed a million papers (more or less) to refinance our house.
  • I visited the Roaring River for the first time and watched my kids go down their first "waterslide".
  • I finally visited my sister's house, new to me but no longer to them, in Kansas to deliver child 3 for a week of horse camp there.
  • I cleared out a huge stack of magazines.
  • I have played numerous games of Word Twist, Scrabble, and Words with Friends. Won some, lost some. (I feel like it helps keep my mind young. :)
  • I saw a movie with my two big kids.
  • I had a birthday.
  • We had the cousins come over for a sleepover.
  • I had a check up, which I only do every few years...
  • I read three novels just for fun!
  • We delivered several bags of extra stuff to Goodwill as we cleaned out clothes and cabinets.
  • I bought and labeled almost all of the school supplies for four kids.
  • I made and delivered lunch to our church interns.
  • I tried new recipes (maybe not weekly but several anyway)...the Lasagna in a Bun is a new favorite!
  • I researched dogs for a pet (takes a lot of research with our kids and my allergies) and decided that it is not in our best interest at this time to have one.
  • I cleaned out the fridge and the pantry.
  • I grew my hair a few inches...hopefully I am getting close to being able to cut it. It is driving me crazy!
  • I vacuumed our air conditioning vents.
  • I cleaned out and vacuumed the van. Not an easy chore. Unfortunately, it already needs to be done again!
  • I cleaned out and organized my spices (and yes, they are alphabetized...much easier to find that way).
  • I cleaned out our cups cabinet and got rid of a lot of our "baby" dishes. :(
  • I changed child 4's crib to a bed, then a few days later, changed it back!
  • Possibly saved a baby bird. I checked the nest tonight...saw TWO baby birds peering down at me! That made my heart feel a lot better.
  • I had my first dinner at Hugo's with a friend. Yum, yum!
  • I have already spent several hours in the classroom and at home preparing for the new school year.

Hmmm, I suddenly am not feeling like such a failure after all...

So, what did you accomplish this summer? Think about it. I bet you will find out you have done more than you thought! I know I have.

I Heart Summer

Why do I heart summer?

I will admit, I do truly heart it BUT it isn't my favorite season. That would be fall. I love the weather of fall, going out for hikes, high school football games, colorful trees. I do love fall.

However, I do heart summer too, just not quite as much. Why you ask? (Just pretend you asked, just for me...)

  • No curling iron. It is a rare thing for me to use a curling iron in the summertime. I just brush and go, this summer more than most because my hair is too long to do anything with anyway. (It is driving me crazy)
  • Not setting the alarm. We have had to do it more this summer than usual due to camps and such, but still, most mornings it is not set. I wake up to the "preschooler" alarm...the one yelling over the monitor, "Get me up, Mom! I want out of here!" :)
  • Afternoon naps. I have a very wacky sleep schedule in the summertime. I stay up late, sleep in as much as I can, which is not as much as I want. Then take an afternoon nap. That night, I cannot sleep after the nap, so I stay up late again. It is a vicious cycle. I know, I know, I stay up late all year, but it is much worse in the summer. Love those afternoon naps though.
  • Checking e-mail and Facebook throughout the day. No, not all day. Tempting though. :) But at naptime, I usually catch up on Facebook posts which is better than the school year. When I catch up then it takes a REALLY long time. I much prefer doing it in small doses.
  • Trying out new recipes. I am not as likely to try out new recipes during the school year. I stick to my "tried and true" recipes. I am not complaining. I have a cookbook full of them. But it is fun in the summer to have a little more time to try something new. Our newest one is Lasagna in a Bun which I found in a magazine. Oh, yum. We had some tonight.
  • Leisurely lunches. Obviously during the school year, I have learned to eat very quickly. In the summer, I like to sit, read the paper or a magazine, and enjoy the taste of my food.
  • Trips to the beach. Even the oily ones.
  • Time to organize. Not much, mind you. With four kiddos, one being a very busy toddler, I take what I can get. But it is more than I have energy for during the school year.
  • Hanging out in my pj's until I am forced to get dressed. I love having Pajama Day any day. :)
  • Catching up on my magazine reading. During the school year, I only get snippets to read through a magazine. During the summer, I get to read more.
  • Speaking of reading, I read actual books during the summer, usually on vacation.
  • Lightning bugs. I love to watch them light up the evening sky. Brings back many memories from my childhood.
  • Meteor showers, especially in August. My oldest and I like to go out there and count how many "shooting stars" we see.
  • Fruit. I love the variety of fruit available this time of year. I eat a few things but our youngest can eat his weight in fruit. And I am pretty sure he does in the summertime.
  • Laid back schedules. We may just decide to go to the zoo one day (did last year) and just went. Love that flexibility.

I could go on and on, but I need to head to bed. So, tell me, what is something you heart about summer?

The Old Gray Mare...

She ain't what she used to be...

Okay, just for the record, I am NOT referring to myself. Or any person. But rather summer.

Every year as the school year wraps up, my thoughts drift to the days of summers. I immediately think of lazy mornings sleeping in, days spent hanging around the house, playing in the sprinkler, eating ice cream. I imagine nights of sitting outside with Mark, hand in hand, as we watch the children chase lightning bugs around the house. I dream of our beach vacation, picking up seashells and running in the waves. I envision weekend hikes to new places, happening on a fishing hole with NO snakes. And to make it all even better, I dream big...I dream of organizing our house, just a little each day, until it is where I want it to be. Sigh.

Thus far, that hasn't happened. Not one little bit. Note: I am not complaining necessarily. I am thankful for a job that I love that also allows me to be home in the summer...the very short summer.

This year my summer is about two months long. Two months and one day to be exact. So I was already feeling the frantic emotions of "where did the time go?" on the first day!

So far, I think there has been maybe one or two days that I haven't had to get up by a certain time or not set the alarm...even on the weekend! Even the days I haven't set it, I usually wake up when Mark leaves for work, which means I am still not sleeping in. Of course, the kids don't sleep in anyway most of the time. I have trained the oldest ones to wait until they hear me stir, but the youngest one hasn't learned that trick yet.

Our days have been filled with activities, appointments, and camps. Not necessarily bad things but obligations to our day nonetheless. Looking at our calendar for the summer, I see that will continue. And I support our kids in pursuing activities, like our oldest attending a sports camp. That is good for him. It just takes up a lot of time usually in a car with the other kiddos riding along.

We are still headed to the beach, but not with as much gusto as before. We likely will NOT be getting in the water. I cannot seem to get a clear picture of how safe it is. And that is okay...we will make the most of it. The important thing is that we will be together, enjoying family time. It just won't quite be what I had hoped. (Though I am not an ocean swimmer typically, I do usually love to walk barefoot right on the edge of the water, letting the water roll in on my feet...not getting that this year :()

The organization efforts have been minimal. It isn't that I am doing nothing all day (though I admit taking naps each afternoon to compensate for the lack of sleep at night due to leg cramps)...I am just buried in laundry, unpacking (then repacking), the girls' party, church stuff, etc. I think the frustrating part is that I know if I don't get it done now, I won't even have a chance to do it until next summer. And I don't know if I can live with that. The funny thing is that at some point this summer, the three oldest children are going places for a few days...just never at the same time. It really doesn't matter because the youngest is stuck here with me, and he is delightful and fun but not a lot of help around the house. :)

So far, little time has been spent outside. It has been too stinkin' hot. Typically June is a rainy month for us, with cooler temperatures. Then July becomes this sauna. Well, this year June is the sauna. What does that mean for July??? Even my children won't go out and play right now due to the heat. It is times like this I may covet, just a bit, the swimming pools so many have in their yards. I am pretty sure we would use one...when we aren't out and running around.

Then there is our getaway. Mark and I have had a "getaway" for the last couple years around my birthday in August. It has always been a treat to have that time to "get away" from it all before starting another school year. This year, we had our getaway at the beginning of the summer...to Vegas. Since Mark had to be there for work, and I had never been, it seemed like a perfect plan. Only it wasn't so cheap. We budget in for our beach vacation, but we did not budget in for this. And while I was able to cross a couple things (The Vegas strip of hotels, Grand Canyon) off my "bucket list" that I haven't taken the time to actually write, I honestly wasn't that crazy about the city itself. Or at least the parts I saw (other than the trip to the Grand Canyon). I always love to get away with my main squeeze. I am just pretty sure in August, I will be sad when I don't get to do it. That and when we have to pay the bills this next month for that trip! (We were fortunate with our San Francisco trip...it was paid for through some promotion Mark won, and our trip last year to Mt. Magazine was a fraction of the cost of the other trips)

Not to say it has all been bad. I love that my sister and her kids usually come at least once in the summer for a week or two, though I never get to see her as much as I want. And I do get to take care of some household stuff during the day which could leave me more time at night if I didn't have so much going on right now. Of course, I also get to enjoy more time with the kids, which I may joke about but truly do enjoy doing.

I just think summer has lost a little of its magic...

The Old Gray Mare just ain't what she used to be!

More later,

All Roads Lead...

to the Beach...

For Christmas, one of my favorite gifts was a shirt with this saying. I had seen it in a magazine or something and had fallen in love with it. I am already ready for warmer weather just so I can wear it! (I did get to wear it while in Florida over the Christmas break)

Anyway, I didn't grow up going to the beach. We did take trips to Disney World sometimes, and when we did, we usually stopped by the beach. And I did spend some time playing on the sand dunes of Lake Michigan when we visited our grandparents in the summer. But otherwise, I had little beach experience other than occasionally watching a movie...like Beaches. :)

In college, one spring break I did do a beach reach with a trip to Hilton Head island. Yes, we actually did mission work AT the beach. I remember enjoying the trip; I actually have more vivid memories of that trip than a lot of others. It was fun, but I don't remember my heart just being sold out...yet.

When our big kids were young, Mark took a business trip to Destin. I have no idea why they had lighting meetings in Destin, but he went anyway. I remember him calling and saying, "You have got to see the beach here, Reba. It is beautiful. The sand is white. The water is so blue." So when our daughter was around one and our son was three and a half, we took a little trip to Destin. It was everything Mark promised and more. We didn't know much about beach rentals. For instance, "beach view" as listed on advertisements actually means you will be able to see the beach. It doesn't say that you might have to stand on the roof or see just a glimpse of it between the high rise condos that are between you and the beach. In our case, we failed to see "a short walk to the beach" as having to cross a fairly busy highway. We also didn't know at the time that those little umbrellas and chairs set up were there for use IF you were willing to pay to rent them! We learned a lot that trip. Some of my favorite memories: Child 2 eating sand. I have pictures of her little mouth just covered with sand. Swimming with the dolphins at a local aquarium. That was SO much fun. Mark and Child 1 taking a helicopter trip. Don't you know as a preschooler that was a big deal? And snorkeling...my first time to do it. I never knew that fish would go crazy over frozen peas! Anyway, it was fun.

We didn't go to the beach again until Child 3 was home. The first full summer she was with us we packed up and headed to Galveston. Yes, we always drive. We just cannot afford to fly. Mark doesn't particularly care for that part but it is a necessary evil. (Of course, he would fly two towns over I think if he could...he much prefers flying over driving) The good part is that often the rentals are weekly, and with the weekends in there, we have enough time to drive and still enjoy much of the week. Anyway, Child 3was three, Child 2 was six, and Child 1 was eight. We rented this beautiful little beach house...gulf front. We learned a few things about wording. :) It really was gulf front too. We walked out the door and walked down the steps and onto the sand. It had a huge deck where we could listen to the waves. We stood on that deck and watched a sand crab scuttle down a dune. Favorite memories? Child 3 in the water...her first time to see the ocean other than flying over it. Visiting NASA in Houston. And finding out that our youngest's DNA test was being done...we were in the midst of another adoption already. (I know, crazy, huh? :) My very favorite memory though is just our time together. I loved watching Mark and the big kids boogie board. Sitting out on the deck. Collecting seashells. That time together. It was then my heart was hooked. A year later, Hurricane Ike hit Galveston. I am pretty sure that beautiful little beach house we stayed in is gone. (It is no longer listed as a rental property anyway) My heart still aches. It wasn't as pretty of a beach as the Florida coast but it was beautiful and holds dear memories that I will forever cherish in my heart.

Two years ago, we decided to visit Gulf Shores, which is sometimes referred to as the Riviera of the South. This time, we decided to stay in a townhouse. While we loved the beach house, we realized that with children, having pool access was a pretty big deal. Yes, even when you are by the ocean! And that is what we did...we spent time in the ocean. And then the kids would spend some time in the pool. Favorite memories? Joshua's first time to see the ocean. Watching Child 3 jump in the water our first day there, fully clothes. Having our family portrait (several hanging in our living room) made on the beach. Visiting Dauphin Island by ferry. The zoo...little but with a lot of animals! A dolphin cruise. And food...lots of good food. Like Lulu's. Yum!

Last year we decided to return to Destin. This time we looked for those cue words "gulf front" (I don't have a lot of experience with other waters, but we LOVE gulf water...warm and fairly gentle). We found a wonderful townhouse on a quiet beach. We also took our first visitor...Our oldest's friend L. joined us for the week. Favorite memories? Walks on the beach. Crabbing. Visiting some friends at a nearby lake. Watching the kids build sand castles. Snorkeling with kids. Sitting with Mark on the deck overlooking the water. And seafood nachos at Elmo's...my mouth still waters when I think of them!

Needless to say, I am hooked. I don't know if it is the warmth. I have mentioned how much I prefer warm weather over the cold. Maybe it is the peace that comes from walking barefoot on the sand with the waves crashing at your feet. I feel closer to God there than most anywhere else. Of course, I also think it is the slower pace. There is no tug to go do chores around the house. I don't feel depressed looking at the unorganized piles that need to be dealt with. We get to truly just enjoy ourselves. (Oddly, we do laundry better on our vacations than at home...there is just something about doing it at our own leisure and listening to the waves crash around us...) And of course, lastly there is that time together. My heart feels like it will burst when I watch the kids run into the waves laughing. Or stretch out on the sand together. Or dance in the moonlight as we "hunt" for crabs. It is just one of my favorite memories, something I look forward to each year. (Not that it is all smiles...they still argue too. But for some reason, it doesn't bother me as much there :)

As usual, with snow swirling outside, my thoughts turned to the beach again. It happens this time of year...I start to think, "Hey, let's plan a trip!" I told Mark that for six months I am basking in the memories, then for the next six months I am in eager anticipation of our next trip :). I like to travel, which is kind of funny since I am such a homebody. I like to see new places, try new things. And my travel list is long. I want to go to New York City, the Grand Canyon, back to San Francisco, visit Hawaii, spend some time in Chicago, travel the East Coast. I have lots of places I long to see. And maybe one day I will. But for now, all we can afford (if that) is one "real" trip...and I choose the beach.

I had thought we were going to be traveling with some family this year. It just didn't work out which was crushing. I want so much to experience those beach times together...maybe one day we will. And unfortunately while I was waiting to find out if it would, the townhouse we stayed in Destin filled up the summer rentals. I was feeling a bit defeated. Then this week my thoughts kept going back to Gulf Shores. I had just assumed we would go back to Destin, and I hope we will next year. But Gulf Shores is a bit closer. Plus they have Lulu's. :) I started looking at Fort Morgan which is nearby but not quite as busy (I think). I spent much of yesterday checking out rental possibilities. I finally narrowed down to what I thought was a good option for us. And today, I watched Mark push "reserve" on a townhouse there, "gulf front" of course :).

So, now for the next six months, I am going to eagerly anticipate the time we will spend on the sand and in the sun...my rejuvenation for the year. (There are still some townhouse rentals available, some for very reasonable prices if you want to join us :)

After all, all roads lead to the beach!

Farewell Thee, Summer

It is easy to focus on what we didn't do this summer. Every year when we come home for the summer, I have such high hopes of what we will accomplish (both fun and not fun) in our time at home. And now, I am a day away from returning to school (kids don't start for another week). I look at my closet...one of my "to do's" for the summer. It is still not very organized and full of things I need to go through. I open up my cabinet under the sink and remember how very much I need to get under it and clean. I look at the yard and wonder where our playtime went. And I look at Maria and remember now I was going to work on some handwriting lessons with her. And now it is too late. The summer is ending. My "vacation" is done.

But then as I look back through the pictures, I remember many things we DID do this summer (good and bad)...

  • playing in the sprinkler (though not as much as I thought we would...it was kind of a weird weather summer)
  • swimming at friends' and Grams'/Grampop's house
  • twisting and spraining my ankle which threw a HUGE wrench in my plans to exercise and lose weight this summer
  • playing with cousins (our Kansas and Mississippi cousins)
  • snow cones (the girls got the snow cone machine for their birthday; it has been used a LOT since then...many times by me late at night after they are in bed :)

  • a 7+ mile hike, some of it in the rain and some amazing views
  • the start of chores...why did I not start this earlier?
  • The DS, the lemonade and shell stand that went in to paying for it...the kid's first big "buy" (Thanks to M. for her part in that)
